First used by the Phoenicians in the 16th century BC, this specialty purple was named after the city of Tyre. Collected from an elusive sea snail, the dye was also known as royal purple or imperial purple and was incredibly expensive, thus restricting its potential pool of wearers to only the wealthiest and most powerful figures in society.
